{"id":60,"date":"2017-02-16T21:42:06","date_gmt":"2017-02-16T21:42:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/argento.tlc.unipr.it\/?page_id=60"},"modified":"2017-05-04T15:26:35","modified_gmt":"2017-05-04T15:26:35","slug":"laboratory","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/optiklab.tlc.unipr.it\/index.php\/laboratory\/","title":{"rendered":"Laboratory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Optiklab group has a laboratory were optical communication experiments, both for didactic and research purposes, can be carried out.<\/p>\n<h2>Activities<\/h2>\n<p>Over year laboratory activities consisted of measurements\/experiments in the following optical communications sectors:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>EDFA amplified transmission over up to 500km of straight-line dispersion-managed fiber of WDM signals with 10Gb\/s OOK-NRZ modulation<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Recirculating loop&#8221; configuration to propagate the WDM signal over multiple distances of available fiber stretch<\/li>\n<li>Characerization of direct-detection receivers with noise loading for bit-error-rate measurements. Use of advanced software to extrapolate BER and Q-factor from received high-quality data (Bergano&#8217;s method).<\/li>\n<li>Analysis of power transients in EDFAs, and semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA) without and with gain-clamping (GC) (standard GC-Alcatel SOAs and Finisar vertical-cavity linear optical amplifiers (LOA)).<\/li>\n<li>SOA and GC-SOA measurements in collaboration with Turin Politechnic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.photonlab.org\/\">PhotonLab<\/a> within the Italian-ministry funded projects OSATE and WONDER, and with research group of Prof. L. A. Rusch at Laval University, Qu\u00e9bec, Canada.<\/li>\n<li>Measurements of propagation of Gb-Ethernet signals over multi-mode fibers. theoretical study and simulations of 10GbE MMF propagation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Equipment<\/h2>\n<p>The following main measurement equipment is available:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Error Detector and Pulse Pattern Generator up to 10 Gbit\/s &#8211; e\u00a0 Anritsu<\/li>\n<li>Programmable Attenuators &#8211; Anritsu and Photodyne<\/li>\n<li>Laser Drivers &#8211; ILX technologies<\/li>\n<li>Vector Network Analyzer &#8211; HP\/Agilent<\/li>\n<li>Wavelength Meter &#8211; HP\/Agilent<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Miscellaneous optical and electro-optical components:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mach-Zehnder 10 Gb\/s Modulators &#8211; Pirelli<\/li>\n<li>Drivers for 10 Gb\/s modulators &#8211; Miteq<\/li>\n<li>Amplified Photodiodes at 10 Gb\/s &#8211; Miteq \/ Nortel<\/li>\n<li>EDFA &#8211; Pirelli \/ Cisco<\/li>\n<li>LOA &#8211; Genoa\/Finisar<\/li>\n<li>Demultiplexer\/multiplexer Filters &#8211; JDS\/Hitachi<\/li>\n<li>CW Lasers &#8211; Fujitsu\/Mitsubishi<\/li>\n<li>2.5 Gb\/s and 10 Gb\/s Lasers with integrated MZ modulator &#8211; Nortel\/Bookham, engineered at Lubljana University &#8211; Prof. Vidmar&#8217;s group<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All instruments are connected to PCs through IEEE-488 (GPIB) interfaces.<br \/>\nMany components and instruments are generous donations by: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cisco.com\/\">Cisco<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alcatel.com\/\">Alcatel-Lucent<\/a>\u00a0(now Nokia) and <a
